Recent Events: Data Center Explosion and Recovery

On May 31st, 3:45pm Pacific Time a transformer exploded outside of The Planet's H1 data center in Texas destroying an electrical room and causing a power outage throughout the entire data center. We had a total of 25 servers located in this data center.

Upon any servers going offline we receive instant notification via a toolbar we have on our computers as well as phone notification:

Fun Times

Immediately after determining that there was some sort of network issue we called up our contacts at The Planet (our server host) for information on what was going on. Details were very sketchy at first with no clear information getting out. After a while we learned that there was some kind of fire that knocked out the electrical room.

We spent a lot of time with our account manager on the phone over the next few hours. We attempted to get our servers physically moved to another data center, but this idea got shot down.

Faced with a continued outage with no information on when power would be restored, we decided our best course of action would be to setup 24 new machines in one of The Planet's data centers. We were told that all of our old servers had 100% of their data in tact, but we would need to wait for power to come back online before we could access that data. Our backup server was not located in the H1 data center, and as such we decided to begin to restore as much data as possible from it to our new servers.

At 1:10am Pacific Time our first brand new server came online. We worked feverishly to setup this server and others as they came online throughout the night. We began to restore as many forums as we could from the backups that we had available. By 4:00am we had a few servers back online, albeit in a restored state from April while we awaited full data recovery.

Continuing throughout the night we restored as much data as was possible until we had each server back online to a usable state. A little bit over 24 hours after this event started, Martyn and I got some much needed sleep.

Starting at approximately 4:30am on June 2nd we began to see some servers come back online from the H1 data center. Martyn began the process of data recovery from these servers at this time. By 8:43am we already had our first server fully restored to the point it was at from before the original explosion at the data center.

We worked throughout the day and night from June 2nd to 3rd getting all servers back online with as much data recovered as possible. I am happy to report that 100% of all data was fully restored.

In an effort to ensure faster recovery of data in the future, we are purchasing 2 brand new backup servers which will be placed in separate data centers at The Planet. These should be online within a couple of days.

I would like to thank you for your patience and understanding, your overwhelming words of support and encouragement have been very appreciated by our staff.

  • Though the server I'm on hasn't had any problems, I still have to congratulate you guys over the way you've handled the problem and how you've kept the users constantly updated on the issue. Other services who have been affected by the problem didn't seem to be too rushed over solving the problem nor giving updates on the situation.
My respect to you guys :) Go get some rest, you deserve it after the past few days

  • My server does not seem to be affected well not my main one others have but this is no problem. I dont know why you guys stay up all hours to fix something that was not your fault. Great effort was put into getting the servers onlile again. And you all deserve a drink. Members have been understanding there may be them few who sign up just to moan but they dont know how frustrating it is to setup things on a computer also if the computer moans about something then you go back to step 1 etc. This is very annoying people. So thank you Patrick, Martyn, Craig & anyone else who helped in fixing things

  • I am so glad that the servers didn't explode... or even worse, that people got badly hurt. I support FIRES and will always remember this historical moment in ProBoards History! :)

  • The server I'm on was affected. I thought it was just the darn computer or internet lol Thank you so much for your hard work, time and dedication guys. Best of luck!

  • I wasn't on any affected server by this outage, though none the less I congratulate your efforts, hard work, and time that you put into getting the proboards servers back up and running.

You and the entire proboards staff are incredible at what you do! Keep it up!

  • I think my message board is still missing content from May but don't sweat it, it is a low use board and we'll survive. Thank you for your dedication and hard work.

  • My board was on an affected server and indeed I was unable to access the board for a time. When I was able to access board I noticed data was missing but I was relieved to seeing the outage notice at the top which explained the missing data.

    All is well now.

Glad to hear no one was injured.

Thank you for handling the disaster, not of your making, with such prompt and professional efficiency.

  • Fantastic work you guys!.... You got it all back up so fast, now go sleep =D

  • LMAO, love the Userbox. *Snatches userbox*.
Yeah, the server my website was on was also fostigated. It was at least two days before I could explain to all of my active members why my website was replaced by a 404.
Good job, Proboards (and, by extention, The Planet).
Can we get Three Cheers for these guys?

  • THIS is why I use ProBoards! This was an excellent display of customer service, and a devotion to those who use your site! Not only were you able to get up Backup servers to host everything that was lost, even for a temporary time, but you were also able to restore everything within a VERY managable downtime.

I have been having MASSIVE issues with a site called "Twitter", which I'm sure you've heard of, and have not got my updates from them for two weeks. My respect for your Staff, and your company, has gone up even more than it already has been.

Thank you ProBoards Staff. Thank you.

  • This has happened to other sites as well like statcounter.com and several other sites I noticed suffered this explosion as well.

  • The server I was on was afected but it was back online thanks to oyu guys. Ok but I don't wanna do it again :(

  • Another reason why Proboards is the best around!

Proboards admins and other users have always been quick to help us out, usually within minutes of a question.

Thanks again, and well done for handling your problem so well.

  • Is there any chance for there being a single Proboard not recovered?

See, I'd go to a certain RP Forum. I do believe I've got word from the Admin, there, asking what happened ... It suddenly dissappeared! And there's no explanation ...

    It was ...
    http://alliancestream.proboards84.com/index.cgi
And curious - Where is says 'proboards84,' the 84 being the server, right?

... Is there any chance it could have been missed, or something? We haven't any idea ...

    All the best

  • Almost the exact same problem as Azayth with the RP boards that I visit, except when I look at his link it redirects to proboards.com

The one I visit is still accessible, but it's now completely empty - all user accounts, skins, and boards have gone. Appreciate it if you would investigate these few missing boards - I would be very disappointed if I do not get to visit them anymore. Thanks in advance.

  • Very good work and keeping a level head through it. I just have the ads popping back in after I purchased and applied credits and a bit here and there gone (sent an email to you via the payments at google addy) but truly great work coming back and saving our boards after an explosion!!! WOW... Great work.

  • Many thanks to the management and staff of Proboards for seeing us through this problem with their usual stellar level of support and attention to detail!

Though we are on one of the affected servers, we experienced minimum disruption of access to our board, and no known lingering problems. Your timely service update announcements keep us well informed.

A good reputation is worth more than gold; thanks to you all, Proboards is a treasure, and our community is thankful to have found such a wonderful home!

  • My site went down during F.I.R.E.S., so did a friend of mine's on a different server. While I'm thankful that they got everything back up so quickly, I wanted to point out that while most sites have server problems due to a glitched software update or something like that, we had server problems because of an *explosion*.

    Best. Downtime. Ever!

By Blogger Reiku, At June 11, 2008 6:30 AM

  • My forum was affected by this but I must congratulate the team of their efforts to keep us informed and the speed of getting us back online was very much appreciated, we basically run our dog rescue from our forum so couldn't afford to be offline too long and we very happy with the service received, thank you.
