New V5 Feature and Beta Info

Another great new feature in the upcoming ProBoards Version 5 is our new auto-save feature. As you type your message it is periodically saved on our server. In the event that your browser crashes or other problems occur, when you come back to the post page your message will be automatically restored for you to continue working on.

Now, plenty of people have been waiting to hear when we think Version 5 will come out. While we're not set on a date for that, we do have an estimate for when our beta period will begin.

I will say that the absolute earliest I could expect a V5 open beta would be July, but please, don't come down on me if it's not here by then or even soon after. V5 will not be released before it is complete to my standards. If it takes extra months of work, that's what it takes.

  • Thanks for the update on V5. I figured we were a couple of years off yet. Are we going to get to see a preview and get to use it like we did on V4 before that came out? I thought it was nice to be able to use it on the alternate V4 support board a couple years ago.

  • Auto-save? Brilliant feature, I know I needed it in the past.
    I'm looking forward for the beta as well, no matter how long it takes for it to be out. How will the beta system work? A server where we can sign up for test boards or something else?

  • Hey dude to be fair i think you should take as long as you need. V5 sounds like its going to be great and although alot of us can't wait id rather wait and extra month than it to have too many errors.

  • I think we should be able to get the option to convert to the older style or not. Sure some upgrades are pretty nice, like saving periodically. But I like the drop down for the search pages a LOT better.

    Otherwise maybe you can have a panel to pick which updates you'd prefer to keep?

  • I must say I wasn't too happy about being forced to convert. Not that there isn't a lot of hard work put into everything but there are some updates I find useless.

    It's probably just a personal opinion and why listen to one person when there are so many other singing praises but all the same updates should make things easier not clutter up the boards and make things more difficult.

    As I said this is only my personal opinion.

  • I think instead of drop down boxes for the member groups, it should be radio buttons. It takes a couple seconds for the drop down boxes to appear. It would be faster!

  • wow, this will be wonderful! I tend to wax lyrical in my posting, an there have been many many times I have lost thousands of words by bumping the wrong key or with my screen freezing.. automatic saving will really make a difference! you guys rock! <3

  • I agree with some people on here
    about having the choice to convert. Like with any kinda software out there something new
    or upgraded isn't always better.
    I had so many things upgraded and
    some worked, well others didn't and made matters worse. IMO, we should have a choice here to upgrade or not.

  • I dont really agree. That would be really hard to not update the sites that dont want to. Because when Patrick does the updating, he updates servers. Not individual sites.

    Plus who doesnt want this stuff? If they dont like it, they wont have to use it.

  • I have two boards with Proboards.
    One when through the server upgrade
    with not problems. I didn't have much on it as of any codes. The other is in queue and has a few scrips that people were having problems with. So far I'm impressed. Good job!

    Some, myself included, have mentioned that we aren't too keen on the updates. The fact that it's forced means we don't have a choice. Yes some features we don't have to use but others we don't have a choice with.

  • Well, name some that you dont like and that you are forced to use.

    I'll be nit-picky and simplistic because I'm not going to make a huge comment about this because it won't change anything. However you asked.

    Active users in 24hrs
    While not huge it is an eyesore and not even necessary. It doesn't matter who was on in the last 24 hrs. Anyone that pays attention to their forums and/or profiles knows who was active. The only thing that X on the side does is hide who was on, it doesn't even remove the box like I was hoping. The only thing hidden is the names which makes no sense to me if the box is just going to stay. It still shows me how many but no names. WTF is the point of that?

    Page Jumps
    Gone is the convenient drop down box, replaced with a different menu of sorts. I didn't even know it was there until I accidentally hovered over one of the numbers and it popped up. This type of menu doesn't offer the same easy selection the last one did. Instead of one menu for page jumps I have two, three if you count being able to hover over the other numbers. I don't understand the reasoning behind that. Not only can I not simply have the menu drop down and then just select I have to type it in and press Go. I can't even hit enter. This is, to me, a useless update that I am very much against.

    These are just two small things yes however, the fact that these were updated instead of more important features, once again to me, seems annoying to be honest. Don't get me wrong I appreciate all the hard work and it's just me venting and ranting and wanting to have my opinion among the sea of thanks.

    What I would like updated would be the search function which seems to be severely lacking in any substance. I've typed in words I know exist in posts and yet it says there are none. On the off chance I do find some posts they aren't numbered so I have to look at the post number and go searching and hope I hit the right page. With the new menu it's pretty frustrating.

    However, I would like to say that despite my ranting I do, as I said, appreciate the hard work. I do hope it is kept up but felt I needed to give some honest criticism because as a member I think it is important to say if we feel something is not working as well as it could.

    As I said you can choose to hide the names. I also forgot to mention that when I do click the X it also records incorrectly how many are on too.

    I also would like to point out that I didn't say the page jump was gone. Obviously you didn't read my comment very well.
